Desiderio Sarmiento
Born in Baracoa, Guantánamo province, Sarmiento is a 1960 graduate of Drawing from the Institute of Cuban–North American Culture. His skills in painting are self-taught-- acquired from hours of diligent practice.
Sarmiento works in many different styles ranging from work that appears cubist or abstract, to a more graphic and minimal style. Rooted in Afro-Cuban iconography, Sarmiento’s mixed media works present a stunningly unusual incorporation of natural materials such as coconut husk, leaf from the banana tree, seeds, and vegetable peel. These highly unique works depict his curiosity for texture and depth and his skill in style mixing.
He is currently a member of the Center for the Development of Visual Arts. As an independent artist, he has participated in numerous collective and personal exhibitions. Those particularly noteworthy include:
