Aneet Rivas Fontes
RE-IMAGINING HAVANA
AUGUST 13 - SEPT 15, 2010
GALERIA CUBANA - PROVINCETOWN
Rivas explores her surroundings from an unusual vantage point-- transforming the real and common into a surreal display of beauty. She captures images of every corner of her city-- under staircases, behind doors, and especially in the busy streets of Havana. She begins the process by taking photographs using unusual angles and experimental lighting. Rivas waits for the perfect moment to snap a picture that translates the energy, and power of that particular time and place. Adding another dimension to the work, she engraves those images to produce very powerful and unique lithographs.
Such lithographs contain her appreciation and understanding of what is happening in the world. They are a personal reflection and careful study of a hidden and unusual beauty that is not evident to everyone, but is nonetheless present among us.
Rivas is the recipient of the highest award in the
2007 National Conference of Engraving.
