Biography:

Yunayka Martinez was is a member of the National Council of Fine Arts and the Associaton Hermanos Saiz. Between 2004 and 2007 she served as a gallery specialist at San Alejandro School of Art in Havana. Presently Yunayka occupies the role of Assistant Director of Activities at the same prestigious academy. She is a graduate of the San Alejandro School of Art and the Center for Experimental Visual Arts in Havana.

The issue of emigration has been constant in Martinez’s life. Using the sea, a powerful reminder of what lies beyond and what keeps those in the island, Yunayka’s work explores the crisis of emigration. Her work addresses issues of diaspora: broken families, faraway friends, and lost loves.  Acrylics and mixed media bring to life her visions of abstract landscapes with figures suspended in space and time.
