The visual complexity of urban life has long fascinated Aneet R. Fontes. For her, visual complexity lies not only in architectural elements, but in the customs and patterns of each city's inhabitants.
For Fontes, the city is nourished and developed by the repetition of these customs. Fontes recognizes each moment as unique and at the same time repeated within a constant state of daily flow. In her latest exhibition, MultipliCiTY, the artist presents 15 new paintings in which she focuses on "conveying the everyday, the imperceptible details in the actions of the people and how they blend to create modern life."
This year, Fontes broadens her scope by introducing a new urban landscape of New York, in addition to those of her home city of Havana and her beloved Boston. Now a resident of Miami, Fontes has traversed new terrain in the United States over the past two years, while continuing to visit Havana each year. She explores these cities with excitement through the lens of a tourist. From the impact of memories to the passion for a subject, she is guided by thoughts and fragments of everyday life. In this way, she communicates on multiple levels with people from all walks of life, creating a discussion about one's sense of community and belonging.
