Belonging is a universal struggle. The emotional turmoil of finding one’s place in the world is expressed in the works of four Galeria Cubana artists in the exhibition ¿Donde encuentro acomodo? (Where do I find comfort)?
Guillermo Estrada addresses the process of finding of a place of comfort in the world through his depictions of contorted bodies in tight spaces, at times attempting to emerge. Estrada proposes that despite differing circumstances whether they be poverty, inequality, sexual identity, or displacement, our struggle to find comfort is remarkably similar.
26 year old Aissa Santiso explores the enduring search for happiness. Her oil paintings, two in large scale, explore the imprint of multiculturalism, age, gender and the imposition of external subjects or the "other" in controlling our individual direction, wishes and desires.
Edel Bordon continues to probe the existential questions centered on identity through themes of emigration/ immigration and (homo)sexuality in his meticulously executed oil paintings and detailed drawings using a sewing needle.
Self-taught artist Juan Carlos Vazquez Lima addresses the intricacies of perspective. His whimsical drawings convey the often random and chaotic hurdles of daily life. His work is representative of life in Cuba as journey and adventure.
