CREER
(To Believe)
May 29 - June 7, 2021
This exhibition features the works of Afro Cuban artists: Yasser G. Rittoles and Isolina Limonta. It offers 16 new mixed media paintings on canvas and paper addressing issues of race, sorrow and spirituality.
Yasser G. Rittoles challenges the viewer to delve deeply into the construct of race. Rittoles’ limited color palette and minimalist compositions reflect not only his personal struggle and protest, but a collective one during a time of worldwide upheaval. In several impressive large scale mixed media works, the artist stitches text using yarn in reverse Western logical reading order. This technique beckons the viewer to see from the opposite perspective. In other works, Rittoles slashes the canvas, revealing another level of red. His incisions illustrate the wounds of racism, but also reveal that under the skin, we are the same. His work is powerful and poignant, as it reminds us that we are all part of a human family.
Throughout her 14 years years represented by Galeria Cubana, Isolina Limonta has been sought after for her distinctively embossed, hand embellished vibrant collograph prints.
This year during the pandemic, the artist spent much of her time in solitude, largely away from the printing press. Limonta says the fear and sadness led her to limit her color palette to black and white, working with Chinese ink only.
The sense of loss for those who perished from Covid prompted Limonta to invoke the Orishas (gods of Santeria) in several of her pieces, asking for guidance and compassion for those suffering throughout the world.
