Aissa Santiso
Mentes Inocentes (Innocent Minds)
July 22 - August 2, 2021
Galería Cubana is pleased to present 11 oil paintings by the young artist Aissa Santiso in Mentes Innocentes (Innocent Minds). In this exhibition, Aissa Santiso reminds us that our lives are connected to each other and to the natural world. In the words of the artist, “This a series of portraits in which the image of a woman is the protagonist. Androgynous, domestic, young, theatrical—each painting involves a particular story or moment taken from everyday life. A rainy day, a spring morning, being next to another, an afternoon in the forest… Each portrait reflects parts of ourselves and our identities.”
Santiso's medium is oil on canvas, yet her technique is unusual. She conducts a washing and drying process with each canvas, so that three layers of paint can be sinuously distinguished in each painting. Her technique complements her candidly emotional and psychological paintings that explore issues of gender, sexuality and identity.
Aissa Santiso invites you to view her “Tarot”of portraiture in this special exhibition.
Santiso was born in Cuba with lineages from both Spain and France. She is a graduate of the Institute of Superior Art (ISA) in Havana, Cuba. Santiso has been living in Madrid, Spain for 4 years.
