Galería Cubana is pleased to present an expansive exhibition of hauntingly beautiful and soulful new work by Edel Bordón and Aissa Santiso. Represented by the gallery for 15 years, Bordón continues to produce artwork that transcends genre and style. His works explore varying subjects from the origins of humankind, to love and loneliness.
Edel Bordón has participated in over 40 personal exhibitions and scores of collective shows around the world. He has served as the Director of Painting at the San Alejandro School of Art in Havana, Cuba (the oldest art school in all of Latin America) for decades. In this position, he taught several artists represented by Galeria Cubana including Aissa Santiso, Aneet Fontes, Darwin E. Martinez, Andrey Quintana, Irian Ursula. Bordón continues to be an enormous influence in the lives of young artists in Cuba.
Born in 1992, Aissa Santiso was a student of Edel Bordón. Under his tutelage, experimental painting using various mediums and techniques was encouraged as was the development of a feminist perspective. For Santiso, painting is a personal process, which starts from an intimate relationship between the human being, the surface, and the surrounding reality.
In this exhibition, Santiso presents 12 new paintings. Santiso's medium is oil on canvas, yet her technique is unusual. The artist conducts a washing and drying process with each canvas. Three layers of paint can be sinuously distinguished in most paintings.
Her technique complements her candidly emotional and psychological paintings that explore issues of gender, sexuality and identity.
Santiso was born in Cuba with lineages from both Spain and France. She has been living in Madrid, Spain for 5 years.
