Galería Cubana opens its 16th year with our beloved Sandra Dooley who has been with the gallery since its inception in 2007. In her latest exhibition Celebración de la vida (Celebration of Life), Dooley presents a robust array of 24 new paintings. The artist continues to focus her attention on life's pleasures despite difficult times.
A homebody at heart, Dooley passes most of her days painting in her home studio caring for her adoptive pets, and confiding with close friends and family. Her home life brings her both joy and inspiration.
Dooley collects clothes and buttons from neighbors, friends and visitors to incorporate them playfully in her mixed media works. She integrates intricate pieces of lace and jute, colorful buttons, and patterned fabrics by adhering or stitching them directly into the canvas. As a self- taught painter, she is in many ways free of traditional training. She explores the physicality of paint; she builds it up, carves into it, and adds glue to create rich collage with fabrics.
Sandra Dooley has been painting for over 20 years and represented by Galería Cubana for 16 years. Her works are in collections worldwide.
