Galería Cubana is pleased to present 10 oil paintings by Aissa Santiso in La psique/ El psique (The psyche). Santiso again offers us a “Tarot”of portraiture in this special exhibition. Her candidly emotional and psychological paintings explore issues of gender, sexuality and identity. Each painting involves a particular story or moment taken from everyday life.
Santiso's medium is oil on canvas, yet her technique is unusual. She conducts a washing and drying process with each canvas, so that three layers of paint can be sinuously distinguished in each painting.
Santiso was born in Cuba with lineages from both Spain and France. She is a graduate of the Institute of Superior Art (ISA) in Havana, Cuba. Santiso has been living in Madrid, Spain for 6 years.
Galería Cubana is pleased to present for the first time, self taught artist Adrian Socorro. Socorro deftly uses line and color, gesture and facial expression, to convey the inner workings of his subjects. They may be in repose, pondering, talking, having a thought while their companion is reading aside them. His abstract realistic style is rendered through the spontaneity of his brushstrokes and tonality of his limited palette. Socorro masterfully uses color and space to say what holds weight in the painting. The more you gaze, the more your own psyche engages. A dialogue ensues between subject and artist, viewer and subject.
