Cuba: The City + the Sea explores both the urban and coastal sides of Cuba, and brings a fresh look to Galeria Cubana. The exhibition showcases the work of two new artists and the return of Yerandee Duran after many years.
Manual Pérez Marrero presents gorgeous impressionistic scenes of a dynamic Havana skyline in both medium and small scale paintings. The artist captures the beauty and complexity of the city’s colonial architecture. Vintage cars ride by while people bustle off to their destinations in his wonderfully executed and affordable cityscapes.
Yerandee Duran paints the vintage cars that hum all throughout the island. His paintings capture the zeitgeist of a bygone era through muted tones and superimposed text of the original advertisement graphics of the1950s.
Newcomer Anyelmadellin Calzadilla retreats to the sea. Her attention is focused on Cuba’s reputation as a tropical paradise. Calzadilla’s multimedia works depict the coast and its treasured beach chairs and sailboats. The artist presents paintings and mixed media works using opaque layers of exquisite color, invoking ideas of the pure and simple— like a day on the beach.
