Born in Havana in 1963, Ares earned his degrees in both medicine and psychiatry. Throughout his education, drawing cartoons was his passion. His first cartoon was published in 1984 while still in medical school. It was after his graduation in 1993 that he decided to dedicate his life to art. He currently works in Havana as a freelance artist and illustrator. His works have been published around the world. He has won 133 international awards and has published 22 books. He has illustrated more than 80 books and has worked in TV and film with some of his works being used to make short animated films (Filminutos). In 1994, Ares was nominated by Witty World Magazine (USA) as one of the best cartoonists in the world. He is included in the survey of the 20 Most Outstanding Cuban Cartoonists of the 20th Century. In 2002, Ares received the National Culture Medal from the Cuban Ministry of Culture.
