Harold López is masterful at manipulating color and space to communicate the temporality of feeling. When confronted with the vivid, contrasting reds and greens, the viewer is tugged into the layered emotional landscape of their paintings.
Broad brush strokes of oil paint embolden the scene, while empty, shadowed spaces adjacent to the subject accent their solitude. The figures are often looking beyond the frame we have access to—in reminiscence or anticipation—giving the impression that something has just happened, or is about to happen. We are thus presented with a transience: a visual nostalgia for a moment just past or a provisional repose bound to be interrupted.
