Yasser G. Rittoles challenges the viewer to delve deeply into the construct of race. He continues his self-portrait series begun in 2018 as a way to deconstruct the psychological limits he sees as pre-established by society. The artist believes that despite our extensive human advancements in science and technology, ignorance still persists in the denigration of people based on skin color or race. Rittoles’ use of a limited color palette and minimalist composition, portrays his personal struggle and the collective protest of people of color worldwide.
In several mixed media works, the artist stitches text using yarn in reverse Western logical reading order. This technique beckons the viewer to see from the opposite perspective. Rittoles slashes the canvas, revealing yet another level of red. He intends to illustrate the wounds of racism, but also that under the skin, we are the same. We have the same blood and are all part of a human family.
